Speed-ups and queues both cut waiting, but they do it in different ways. A speed-up removes time from a job already running and is gone once used, while an extra queue lets another job run in parallel and keeps doing so every day afterwards. On top of that, some time comes off for free, through the Builder's Hut and through alliance help.
Speed-ups
There are five kinds of speed-up: construction, troop training, research, healing and universal. Each kind comes in eight denominations, from one minute to five days. The universal one works everywhere while specialised ones only serve their own task, so at equal size the universal one is worth more.
Larger denominations are cheaper per minute than small ones, which makes small ones best held back for finishing nearly-complete buildings.
Free time
The Builder's Hut shaves a free window off construction, and at max level that window runs half an hour. Anything that builds in under half an hour completes without spending a single item.
Queues
There are several queues, and extra ones are unlocked with separate items. A new queue speeds nothing up, it lets one more job run in parallel. Over a long run that beats speed-ups, because a queue works every day while a speed-up is spent once.
Alliance help
Alliance help removes time from construction, research and healing queues, but not from troop training. The details are collected in Alliance.
How many queues to open for a given set of buildings and which build to put speedups into is shown by the build calculator.
